Curators at the Herbert are asking if anyone knows what these carved stones are.
The mystery stonework is located at Whitefriars Monastery but isn’t catalogued.
Experts advise that it is not local stone and is probably early 20th Century. The stones are stacked three hight on pallets and have not been laid out, so its not possible to determine the layout.
Experts think that it might be a pulpitum or a building façade.
A pulpitum is a massive, often decorative screen, typically made of stone or timber, that divides the choir from the nave and ambulatory in medieval cathedrals and monastic churches.
Collective wisdom suggests that this may have been part of an exhibition at Whitefriars in the early 1990s, the Art of the Stonemason, but sadly that exhibition record does not go beyond a leaflet – no object list to confirm if this is true, or where it is from. It does not appear to be part of the museum’s collection.
