Those who attended the Coventry Society Heritage Conference in October will be aware that City Council has resurrected the idea of a Heritage Strategy for the city.
The City Council started work on the strategy in 2020. It was intended to “provide a strategic framework for managing, sustaining and celebrating heritage across the city” and was to run from 2021-2026.
A steering group was set up, which at that time included Coventry Society.
One of its first actions was to undertake a public survey in November 2020. Five hundred people responded to that survey and you can see the results here.
A draft strategy was produced in 2022, although we can find no record of receiving it. Consultants were commissioned to shape the draft strategy into a final document. What happened after that is not known and is not in the public domain.
Marcus Lynch told the Heritage Conference that work on the strategy is now to move forward again, with the aim of completing it within two years. The four main themes are:
- Understanding Coventry’s heritage
- Protecting & sustaining Coventry’s heritage
- Heritage and the community
- Promoting Coventry’s heritage
A further round of public consultation has now started, using the council’s consultation platform, “Let’s Talk”.
The online survey is now open until 13th December 2025. The link to the survey can be found on this page.
Coventry Society encourages everyone who is interested in the city’s heritage to complete the survey.
